Last year we came to an inflection point in the company where we realized that you, the customers, were demanding better quality products from FCP and it wasn’t necessarily about price. Sure price means something, but if the product fails prematurely and you need to repair your car all over again, there go all your potential savings. All in the same time, we had a few employees who wouldn’t use a particular product we sold on their vehicle, and that really hit home for us. Over the past year, we began to classify products into different categories in an effort to establish purchasing guidelines for our customers as well as to determine what products we should and should not be selling. We follow one simple question: Would you sell this product to put on your families car? Below, I will describe in more detail the two most important categories, Tier 1 and Tier 2 Products.
Tier 1 Products
Parts that have the potential for serious damage should they fail have been classified Tier 1 products. For products that fall into this category, there really is no other thought that goes into it other than this: the part has to be from an OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer – such as Lemforder or TRW), an approved aftermarket manufacturer (Febi or Meyle), or a Genuine (such as OE BMW in the BMW packaging). There are absolutely no exceptions to this rule.
Tier 2 Products
The second category we classify products is Tier 2. Products in this category, if they were to fail, would cause a chain reaction of damage(s) to a vehicle. Think of a timing belt tensioner or water pump, for example: If the water pump were to fail or lock up, the timing belt would come off the pulley, and the engine valves would damage the cylinder head. For products that fall under this category, nearly the same rule applies. We are only offering OEM or an upgrade to OEM.
The Road Ahead
It is my goal and mission to only source and offer the highest quality auto parts and where that path has lead me over the last 12 months has indeed been humbling experience. I have personally scrapped thousands of dollars of sub standard product into a metal recycling dumpster and replaced the units on the shelves with OEM parts as they did not live up to our standards. I have terminated long standing relationships with vendors, as we no longer saw eye to eye as to the type of products that they should be selling FCP. The best part about everything that has been done over the last year; people are finally starting to recognize. Employees who came to me to identify products that they wouldn’t recommend, now feel part of something knowing that their voice has been heard that particular product is no longer on the shelves. Customer are also starting to recognize as well, every week I see more and more emails comment about the quality and sales are actually increasing on the name branded OEM products. This will be an ongoing battle that we will always fight but I feel for the first time, we are ahead in the battle and on offense. The last 12 months were rough, but I am excited for the next 12 and beyond as we have reinforced the foundation for FCP to be here for the long haul.
